JOB DESCRIPTION

The Legislative Intern will serve as the Youth Advisory Council Coordinator for the 1st District County Supervisor. Duties include mentoring at-risk youth, coordinating and overseeing all aspects of the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) program within their district, supervising and facilitating YAC¿s community service events and meetings during the weekdays and weekends, (including evenings). Drive YAC members to and from YAC events and meetings within Riverside County. Assist with the coordination of all Youth Commission meetings, events and projects including 3 large annual events. Assist district staff with constituent issues, correspondence, field work and other duties as needed.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

- Applicants must be currently enrolled/attending school at an accredited college or university in a Bachelors OR Masters program - Area of study: Public or Business Administration, Human Resources, Organizational Studies, Sciences, Psychology, Sociology, Behavioral Science, Industrial Organizational Psychology, Arts, Humanities or related field - Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA required -2 year commitment  

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Learning Objectives: Personal Skills: Teamwork, leadership, communication, time management, personal goal setting, organization, critical thinking, dependability, punctuality, professionalism and boundaries, choices and decision making, attention to details, and multi-tasking. Professional Skills: Documentation and record keeping, marketing, research, public speaking, budgeting, event planning and coordination, negotiation, social media and website management, networking and building relationships, knowledge of parliamentary procedures and Brown Act, drafting legal agreements, purchasing and accounting procedures, and creating publications.  

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Required: -Knowledge of Microsoft Office -Ability to lead and mange youth, plan and organize events, and set boundaries -Time management and organizational skills Desired: -Prior experience with youth -Problem solving, excellent verbal and written communication skills -Self-starter, strong work ethic, and dependable  

BENEFITS

For the first 1,000 hours of work in a fiscal year, the employee is enrolled in and contributes to the County Temporary/Part-Time Employees' Retirement Plan, which is a 401(a) defined benefit pension plan. The County also contributes to the 401(a) on behalf of the employee. During this time, neither the employee nor the County pays into Social Security, and the employee is not enrolled in CalPERS. After 1,000 hours of work in any fiscal year, the employee and County stop contributing to the 401(a) and begin to pay into Social Security. The employee is also enrolled in CalPERS and begins to make contributions.

Some positions may require current enrollment in an accredited graduate school program. Recent graduates are eligible to intern for up to one year from their graduation date.
