POSITION SUMMARY:
The EHS Rig-specialist provides a high level of visible leadership and is a champion of safe rig operations; where jobs are planned and executed safely. The EHS rig-specialist will work closely with the client’s drilling supervisor and drilling contractor personnel to assure EHS management system is fully implemented and sustained by the work crews. The EHS rig-specialist performs technical support duties related to managing high risk activities; evaluation of critical controls; incident reporting and investigation; workforce participation and onboarding. The emphasis of the job is to influence and coach personnel on all matters related to EHS.
 
 TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE:
  • Permit to work systems: Monitor the rig contractor permit to work system, ensuring high risk tasks and activities are managed and avoidance of Simultaneous Operations; verifies personnel understand PTW criteria, hazards and controls are recorded and personnel trained in the application of the system.
  • Emergency Preparation and Response: Ensure adequate arrangements are in place, for all reasonably foreseeable emergencies (environmental and medical emergencies); verifies personnel are properly trained and understand the various response scenarios; coordinates drills and exercises to demonstrate emergency response readiness.   
  • Hazard and Risk Management: Ensure the application of an effective risk management process appropriate with the scope of drilling operations/work activities; evaluate Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and coach personnel on workplace hazards and risk reduction.   
  • Incident Reporting & Investigation: Ensure incidents are properly investigated; perform onsite investigations and/or TapRoot investigation; verifies appropriate corrective and/or preventive actions are taken and embedded to minimize the probability of an incident from occurring again.
  • Onsite Audits and Inspections: Audit against the EHS/SR management system and inspects specific areas and/or equipment to demonstrate compliance with agreed policies, procedures, standards and relevant EHS regulatory requirements; documents findings and take corrective actions. 
  • Behavior-Based Observation Systems: Monitors the rig contractor’s BBS process, workforce participation; analyze data generated and uses result to develop recommendations and corrective action.
  • Environmental and Waste Management: Monitors environmental management systems to demonstrate compliance with regulatory and company requirement; inspects waste disposal methods, labeling and storage of hazardous materials; track and collect emissions and waste data.
  • Drilling and Well Control Operations: Monitors drilling operations and use of equipment from rigging up, making connection, mud circulation systems to casing operations and BOP testing and choke manifold; verifies personnel are competent and preventive maintenance is being conducted
  • Regulatory Requirements: Knowledge of USCG, BSEE (SEMS) regulations.
 
 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Coaching rig personnel on hazard recognition and performing quality detailed JSA.
  • Support and participate in AAR’s to gain learnings and JSA updates
  • Support or participate in rig based risk assessment
  • Verify and test rig contractor mgmt. system, approved policies and standards are being complied with, and report non-conformance to the DSV/CSV and/or D&C EHS Supervisor
  • Supports the DSV/CSV with the implementation of the core EHS activities (e.g. SWA, JSA, AAR, BBS and client’s Rules).
  • Reporting of LOPC incidents and supporting DSV/CSV with the onsite investigations
  • Assist the DSV/CSV with verifying barriers are functioning and maintenance program is adequately followed to prevent critical failures.
  • Supports the DSV/CSV with the onsite incident investigations and following-up on closing of corrective/ preventive action items as entered in Synergi. 
  • Share key learnings from safety alerts to heighten awareness on the rig. 
  • Produce statistics to understand incident trends; and identify, communicate and cascade incident prevention strategies.
  • Contribute to sustainability reporting and other communications vehicles as needed.
  • Coordinate and conduct safety management system audits to evaluate compliance with legislative and drilling contractor safety management system.
  • High level of influencing and leadership skills.
  • Proven ability to determine effective risk controls associated with identified hazards.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve, and to assist in the implementation of appropriate actions.
 
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Ensure that risk is manage by adhering to regularoty compliance drilling operations routines, processes and controls.
  • Self-motivated team player, driving a collaborative work process with rig crews, client’s drilling supervisors and rig management.
  • Work independently, being pro-active at understanding issues, problems and opportunities as well as taking action consistent with improving the safety of rig operations.
  • Facilitative in job planning and execution, not simply relying on work/task instructions.
  • Workplace understanding.
  • 2-5 plus years in a similar offshore role supporting oil and gas drilling operations.
  • Demonstrated experience in EHS training and compliance coaching.
  • Minimum high school graduate, science or engineering education and/or degree preferred.
  • Industry recognized EHS qualification (i.e. Nebosh, Osha or similar) preferred.
  • Understanding of technicalities of drilling processes
