Position Summary: 

Incumbent provides vocational rehabilitation services to address employee disability-related limitations and coordinates the different disability management interests into a viable return to work program.


Salary Range: 


Rate    Minimum  $52,400.00    Maximum  $87,300.00

% Effort

Provides professional expertise to evaluate and facilitate reasonable accommodation placement, options and alternatives for qualified individuals in compliance with federal and state laws/regulations and UC policies and procedures.  Conducts thorough review and analysis of medical and functional ability information relative to essential functions and job requirements to make recommendations for reasonable accommodations and management of medical disability related issues, including medical separation.  Counsels disabled employees and conducts transferable skills analyses to determine vocational alternatives. Consults and communicates with employees, supervision, HR Business Partner, TPAs, treatment providers, etc. as necessary.



Promotes disability prevention and mitigation. Develops disability prevention and management procedures, protocols, and initiatives, including supervisor and departmental education regarding disability awareness, ADA, FEHA, transitional work and leave of absences.  Provides mediation support to resolve issues that may arise between management and an employee with a disability.  Develops and maintains working relationships with community resources and the State Department of Rehabilitation to facilitate the continuation of employment of employees with disabilities.  Provides information and referral to employees with behavioral and/or personal issues affecting their job performance or health.  Coordinates with the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity relative to placement issues for persons with disabilities.



Maintains appropriate records/data in order to monitor programmatic achievement and reporting for stakeholders.  Represents the medical center on system-wide initiatives and committees.



Assists with other related duties that support the Benefits, WC & DM Unit processes and facilitates timely resolution of issues (i.e., routine workstation evaluations, equipment procurement, etc.).

Required Qualifications:

Excellent negotiation and conflict resolution skills and proven ability to influence others internal and external to the organization

Thorough working knowledge of California Workers’ Compensation law and system, Americans with Disability Act, Family Medical Leave Act, and other employment laws relating to disability

Minimum 2 years’  experience working as a Vocational Rehab Counselor

Computer literacy and proficiency

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload

Knowledge and understanding of benefit programs

High degree of professionalism to recognize the need for discretion and maintain confidentiality

Certified Rehabilitation Counselor

Analytical skills to identify problems, conduct research, analyze data and determine solutions

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the HealthSystem

Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties

Skill to analyze, organize and independently prioritize work assignments

Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job


Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in a hospital or healthcare setting

Experience in Human Resources

Certified Professional in Disability Management, Certified Disability Management  Specialist, or similar
